Differences between L1 and L2 learning

In the section on Exposure and Focus on form we looked at some similarities between learning our first language (L1) and learning a second language (L2). There are some very important differences between these two types of language learning. How many can you think of? Use these key words to guide you:
  • Duration of learning?
  • Ways of learning?
  • Motivation?
  • Interaction?
  • Input?
  • Grading?
  • Correction?
What do these differences affect how we teach? How can we personalise the learning process as much as possible?  How can we help create and maintain motivation among our students? How can we help our students get exposure to authentic language? Should we simplify or grade our language?
